Ingredients
Brown basmati rice 4 ½ cups
Water 9 cups
Directions
Place the rice in an 8 quart sauce pot and add water.
Cover tightly and bring to a simmer or cook in a rice cooker until the grains are tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
Allow the rice to rest for 10 minutes, fluff it with a fork, and serve immediately or cool quickly, place in a container and refrigerate for later use.
Recipe Note
Other types of brown rice and whole grains can be prepared using the method described above. The amount of liquid to grain ratio will vary based upon the type, size of the kernels and how much bran, if any, has been removed from the grain. In addition, some rice and grains are per-cooked and dried which changes the ration and affects finished texture and cooking times as well. Most commercial products will print simple cooking directions on the package which will help guide you in the right direction.
Electric rice cookers are excellent for cooking rice and grains and largely negotiate the potential for scorching the bottom of the pot. They typically cook and controlled temperatures and sense when all liquid has been absorbed. They then switch automatically from the cooking setting to a keep warm setting until eaten.
